Yes, Christmas is around the corner which means a lot of last minute cleaning. Here are a few of my favourite hacks that work really well when you’re short on time.
Ceramic top stoves. The rings on these will get a build up of baked on grunge. Forget the ceramic cleaning creams they give you with these stove tops when they’re new; they simply don’t work. Forget razor blades too; they can scratch the glass. What does clean that stuff off in seconds is good old fashioned Easy Off oven cleaner. Make sure the stove top is cool. Spray it on. Wait. Wipe it off. Repeat if necessary. If there is still some baked on goop, spray it again and use a pot scrubber this time. Trust me. It will all disappear with almost no effort.
Chrome faucets. Or anything chrome for that matter. Use a paper towel with rubbing alcohol, and watch all streaks disappear. (I also use this to clean my stainless steel backsplash; works like magic.)
Mirrors and glass. I don’t find Windex to be all that great, frankly. And dishwasher detergent leaves streaks. But a mixture of ammonia and water works really well – just spray it on and wipe it off with a clean paper towel.
Stubborn carpet stains. This works like a charm; it even removes stains that stain removers can’t get rid of.Pat the stain with warm water until it’s damp. Blot it dry. Mix a half cup of hydrogen peroxide (you can get this at your drugstore), 1 tsp of dish detergent and 1/8 c. of ammonia. Use a paper towel or sponge to apply to the stain, another to blot it. Put some handy wrap over the stain and weigh it down overnight with something heavy(I use books) being careful to keep the weight on the plastic and away from the carpet. Leave it to dry overnight. In the morning, the stain should be gone. I’ve used this on coffee stains, tea and wine. All old stains, too. And all gone!
